RJ TIP - My drawing tools
I know that you are asking yourself; "What tools does he use to create his drawings? ". I ask myself the same question every time I look at different artists' work. Do they use traditional wood-cased pencils or mechanical ones? What type of eraser do they use? We, as artists appear to have a fascination in the tools and techniques used by other artists. So, what tools do I use? Have a look through the index to the right and choose the section that interests you.
I'll update this article from time to time as tools do tend to change.
As a graphite artist you can imagine that my primary tool is none other than the pencil. Well you're right and here is how I use mine.
We start off with the graphite that I use. I use Caran d'Ache of Switzerland. The grades 3B down to 6H are 2mm but the 6B is 3mm. I would estimate that 70 percent of what I draw I use 3B 2mm and 2B .5mm, F and 4H.
The Caran d'Arch 2mm and 3mm Fixpencil 22 is my favorite. I have 4 of these each with a different color cap so I can quickly find the grade of graphite I want. In addition to these I have 2 2mm Caran d'Arch Fixpencil 77 which are longer than the 22 , one Scott lead holder, one Staediler Mars-780 because Mike Sibley has one and one .5mm Pental GraphGear 1000.
Other pencils in my arsenal are wooden case pencils from Caran d'Ache, model 777. Solid graphite progresso pencils and I have a Caran d'Ache soft water soluble graphite pencil for special effects.
For work in color I am using Caran D'Ache Supra ColorII Soft color pencils.
This Wiki Link describes different paper sizes.
I actually only use three types of paper for my pencil and charcoal drawings.
For sketching, practice or composition, my choice of paper is a 160 gsm bright white smooth inkjet printer paper.
Finished works are drawn on Smooth or Vellum Bristol ranging from 220 t0 320 gsm, Arches 300 gsm cold pressed water color paper.
Everything in Switzerland is kind of small except for the draughtman' s table in my studio. When I'm not in my studio I use my A3 size Rotring portable drawing board.
