This is my first update of the shading. I have tried to lay down the full range of shades that I will be using in the drawing. This is an important step in planning the rest of the drawing. I now have a good understanding of how I will be able to produce the different textures, wood, stone and metal.
The paper is lending itself perfectly for the stone. The tooth of the paper produces the texture without any additional work. The difficulty is in producing the other textures. In this image I have not worked the wood enough but as I lay on more layers I will flatten the tooth of the paper to get a smoother texture. In some cases I will do this "flattening" with the pencil and when I need a very smooth surface I will "flatten" the tooth with the back of a spoon using a circular motion.
To get the etched images "FD, FJ and some difficult to see dates, I used a technique of indenting. I indent the paper with a hard graphite. In this case 6H. The harder graphite simply repels the softer graphite. It works best when using at least 2 grades softer than the indenting graphite. In this case 6H and F.
