This post is my take on the controversy around the winning of the American Watercolor Society's 141 annual exhibition 2008.The Gold Medal went to Sheryl Luxenburg for her watercolor painting "Impermanence".

The problem with this Hyper Photo Realistic painting is that the images used in the composition are not those of the artist. They were purchased ( I hope) from SutterStock.com.

My understanding of the licensing terms as they pertain to art work are that you can :

  • Use the images as a single hand painted reproduction (not as a printed reproduction) on canvas or other material to be used as decoration and not resold.

And you can not:

  • Use or display an Image in such a manner that gives the impression that the Image was created by you or a person other than the copyright holder of that Image

I use images in this way for some of the drawings on this site.

The question here is: Did the artist cheat in using these images to produce an "original" work for this competition? In a word, YES! This is not an ORIGINAL work it is a DERIVITIVE work. This painting does not merit recognition for creativity in an art competition let alone giving it first place.

I completed the drawing of the Lausanne Cathedral and Chateau. It came out okay, but I was not very happy with the paper. I had a lot of trouble getting dark values and textures. I added the drawing to the gallery if you want to have a closer look.

I'm enjoying drawing landscapes in the 70cm by 50cm format. This is my third project with this size. The first one was "Modern Times" then I did the "Wood Island Light". Now I'm working on a super view of the Catherdral and Chateau in Lausanne.

The reference is looking in the direction of the South Tower from a point above Lausanne near the park of Sauvabelin. If you want to see this view you should walk across the street and walk down the path leading to the Chalet restaurant. Keep on going in that direction and you should come to a viewing platform.

The highest point in the background is Mont Billiat (1894 meters) in France.

The drawing will take around 70 hours to draw. Stay tuned for the finished work.

The visitors have left and the kids will be starting school. That means more time for drawing! I thought I would get the juices flowing with a new Chaplin piece.

Have a look in the Gallery to see the drawing.

One of the members of my "hangout" ,Elena Malec, has proposed to create a drawing based on a poem that she had written. You can read the poem here.

The creative process starts with reading the poem and then producing some mental images of its meaning. At first come very concrete images of the objects described in the poem. After sleeping on it the next images start to be of a more philisophical nature. Even somewhat abstract. Getting these images on paper is a real challenge. This is the starting point for the drawing, the sketch.

Sketching is like walking, you don't actually think about sketching but you think about everything else. How many times have you taken a walk and just let your mind wonder?
